Within the framework of Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival and on the initiative of Directors Across Borders (DAB) Regional Co-production Forum, an annual award “Tolerance Without Borders” was set up in 2007 for the best film projects which contribute towards promotion of tolerance and respect for diversity among peoples of different religions, cultures, races, values, etc. This project is a successful and promising example of contributing to the promotion of tolerance, and it is already the second year that UNDP participates in this nomination in partnership with the DAB, OSCE, and this year also with the Open Society Institute Armenia Foundation (OSIAF) that joined the initiative. During this year’s competition, 7 scripts were submitted for this nomination. The selection Board, consisting of the representatives of the DAB, UNDP, OSCE and OSIAF, has chosen the winner of the competition. On 17 July 2008, the last day of the DAB Regional Co-production Forum, the winner of the “Tolerance Without Borders” project was announced at the award ceremony: director Vahram Mkhitaryan with his script “Shepherd’s Song,” that addresses various aspects of tolerance towards marginalized groups. In the award speech delivered on behalf of Consuelo Vidal, UN RC/UNDP RR, it was mentioned that “the award has a three-fold meaning. On one hand, it is recognition of being the best. At the same time, this award will support actual production of the documentary. And finally – and probably most importantly – this award brings with it a great deal of responsibility for the winner – responsibility of further dissemination of the values of tolerance and respect for diversity.” UNDP representative also thanked the organizers of the Golden Apricot International Film Festival and Directors Across Borders Regional Co-production Forum for their efforts to add a new dimension and incorporate issues of tolerance and universal values in their works. The “Third Rider” documentary produced under the 2007 Tolerance Award by producer Gor Baghdasaryan was presented and screened during the Golden Apricot Film Festival. |
