On 17 October 2008 the United Nations marked the International Day for Poverty Eradication worldwide. The same days, UNDP Armenia addressed the issues of poverty reduction and sustainable development visiting the southern region of Syunik as part of its project “Music and Public Outreach in Regions: Highlighting the Regional Needs through Cultural Lens”. On October 16 and 17 two more concerts took place in Kapan and Goris cities performed by the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia. With these events UNDP has concluded the autumn series of public awareness campaigns planned by the project. In Syunik region, among other development challenges UNDP has identified the issue of poverty eradication. A documentary, newly released by UNDP’s partner Shoghakat TV Studio, was demonstrated in both cities presenting the needs of communities around the region through the prism of the local culture and traditions. In light of observing the International Day for Eradication of Poverty, Mr. Dirk Boberg, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative introduced the audience to “Stand Up and Speak Out against Poverty” action. He noted, “This initiative is an important opportunity to focus the minds of leaders, at the national and international level, to keep their Millennium Development Goals commitments. Our collective efforts to eradicate poverty must pay close attention to the respect of human rights and the dignity of all. They must go beyond basic material needs and address discrimination and inequality”. Inspired by the message of the day, the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia gave a heartfelt performance which received an overwhelming response from the audience. |
