Yerevan, 18 November, 2008 – Today Ms. Consuelo Vidal, UN RC/UNDP RR and Mr. Sergey Borovik, Director of RUSAL ARMENAL announced the winners of the second “Best School Projects” competition. Schoolchildren from 12 schools in Yerevan received certificates for AMD 1 million each for implementation of their socially responsible initiatives. RUSAL UC, the largest aluminum and alumina producer in the world, has allocated USD 50,000 for the new phase of the project, while UNDP in Armenia will coordinate and monitor the implementation of the project. As a result of this competition retained projects will be implemented during the next 5-6 months, such as the establishment of new school gardens in several schools, formation of art groups and the creation of intellectual clubs in others. On particular community project addresses the introduction of a modern system for garbage recycling. Congratulating the winners of the competition, Ms. Consuelo Vidal UN RC/UNDP RR said, “This day symbolizes not only the continuity and fruitfulness of our partnership with UC RUSAL, but also the great support and willingness of our schoolchildren to demonstrate their responsibility and care for the future for their country. That commitment was a driving factor in UNDP’s, and, I am sure, in UC RUSAL’s decision as well to continue the support in this critically important work and I want to thank you for this.” The Director of RUSAL ARMENAL in his speech noted, “During this year the social investments by RUSAL UC in Armenia have reached USD 100,000. This became possible as the format of competition – Best School Projects – was approved by the schoolchildren of Armenia. We hope that the implementation of winner projects will promote the development of children’s creative potential.” |
