On 10 December a press conference and a concluding conference devoted to the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence” and the International Human Rights Day were held at the Congress Hotel with participation of Ms. Consuelo Vidal, UN RC / UNDP RR and Mr. Armen Harutyunyan, Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia.

The event - a joint initiative of UNDP, UNFPA, IoM, UNDPI and UNAIDS, supported by Government of Armenia - became a major round up of events organized within the framework of the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence” 2008 campaign in Armenia. As part of the campaign, public hearings, PSA airings, film screenings, meetings and seminars with representatives of NGOs, community-based organizations, students and local government representatives were conducted in Yerevan and the regions of Armenia.

Addressing the participants of the conference and media, Ms. Consuelo Vidal said that abuses against women can no longer be relegated to the “private” sphere, and accountability is demanded of states to uphold commitments to women’s human rights made in a number of treaties and international documents within the United Nations system. She also stressed that gender-based violence is a serious human rights violation, and that 2008 campaign focused on the protection of the rights of the defenders of women’s rights, so they can engage in advocacy free from threats to their physical and mental well-being.

The conference continued in the format of panel discussions reflecting on cultural and national aspects of violence against women, including domestic violence, trafficking of women.

A Joint Declaration against gender based violence, which has been elaborated and signed by the participants of the forum, became the final outcome of the concluding conference.
