On 9 December the newly built Inter-University Network for cooperation and information exchange was launched officially at the Russian-Armenian (Slavic) University in Yerevan. This fiber optic network was initiated jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation - Armenia (OSIAFA) and the Armenian Research and Educational Networking Association (ARENA). The event was attended by Consuelo Vidal, UN RC/UNDP RR, Larisa Minasyan, OSIAF Executive Director, Mourad Mouradian, ARENA Executive Director as well as governmental officials, representatives of diplomatic corps, international organizations, academia, Armenian libraries, students and mass media.

The fiber optic Inter-University Network at 1GB per second speed was created in an effort to enhance the accessibility, quality and conformity of higher education in Armenia. The network members are a total of 31 public and private universities based in Yerevan. Owing to this initiative, the universities have been provided with a unique opportunity to make use of the modern information technologies such as online networking, distance learning, online testing, videoconferences with local and foreign institutions, etc.

Welcoming the audience Consuelo Vidal mentioned, “The creation of this university network is an alternative way to meet the new demands of quality education”.

The new Inter-University Network has also been connected to the Armenian Library Network which comprises the leading libraries of Yerevan. This will enable students to search, order and receive online all necessary books and information.

“In this way, this initiative will ensure that teaching and research in Armenia achieve and maintain international standards”, Ms. Vidal mentioned.
