Today Mr. Dirk Boberg, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative and Mr. Suren Nerssisyan, Chairman of “Kentron 1” condominium of Yerevan “Kentron” administrative district took part in a one day “garbage cleaning” action in the centre of Yerevan. The project was initiated by local “Civil Society Institute” NGO with the objective to mobilize citizens for volunteer action and to raise the attention of the citizens of Yerevan towards environmental issues. Representatives of the City Council, students from the Linguistic Institute after Bryusov, “Pokr Mher” School, the youth branches of the “World Armenian Congress” NGO and the Ararat Diocese of Armenian Apostolic Church, representatives of NGOs, the district military administration, and mass media, inhabitants of “Kentron 1” condominium participated in the event. In response to the media query, Mr. Dirk Boberg, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative said, “This citizens’ initiative is of paramount importance to sensitize the public and to mobilise residents to raise awareness and become more responsible towards environment issues and related challenges. I hope that many initiatives will follow similar to this one, with more and more residents’ participation.” The initiative was part of the UNV global campaign “volunteering for our planet”. The UNV Programme is a UNDP Programme which promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. This year the UNV Programme strives to track voluntary efforts to adapt, innovate, and mitigate environmental issues. “Every hours count” - with this slogan, time spent by volunteers between the 5 June World Environmental Day and the 5 December International Volunteer Day will be counted on the website: http://sealthedeal2009.org/unv and shown to the delegates of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, thus, demonstrating that people around the world are concerned and wish to take direct action for environment. The initiative in Yerevan has been therefore not only important for the mobilization of people it succeeded to support, but also to acknowledge citizens involved for their efforts toward a more environmental planet. |
