In October 2009 the National Steering Committee (NSC) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) in Armenia approved two grant projects within the GEF focal areas of biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. The projects include the activities aimed at strengthening the implementation of the management plan of Khosrov State Reserve and introduction of new techniques and tools to use renewable energy sources through application of solar dryers in rural households of Lori region. These projects come to supplement the list of ongoing five SGP funded projects that address issues related to land degradation, climate change, biodiversity and persistent organic pollutants. The GEF SGP is a funding facility, supporting community-based organizations that address global environmental concerns through small scale activities at the local level. The Programme supports grassroots initiatives in the focal areas of biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, protection of international waters, prevention of land degradation and phasing out of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). When addressing these issues, SGP also aims to meet objectives related to poverty reduction and empowerment of local population as integral aspects of sustainable development and environmental protection. The GEF SGP-Armenia Country Programme Strategy and grant application procedures can be downloaded here For more information about the SGP projects in Armenia please visit SGP web site. |
